This may be the most underrated game of all time.
I am wondering why no one ever talks about this game at all, even on underrated game websites. Is it because the NES game sucked? Well this is NOT the NES game and unlike the NES game, this one is actually pretty awesome.
GAMEPLAY:
It's a standard platformer which has some elements of a few other shows such as Mario in the sense that you can Transform and gain different powers. In the show, Widget's species are shapeshifers and this stays true in this game and it's one of the best parts. It also works like Mega Man where the right ability can be your victory or your undoing. There's L (Land) forms which allow you to jump on enemies and fire homing weapons, S (Super) forms which make you humanoid and fires powerful fist shots and double shots (in the top form), F (Flying) forms which let you fly and do a short range spreading attack, there's the M (Marine) forms which allow you to easily swim underwater and finally there's the K (Knight) forms which allows you to fire lances in the style of Ghosts N Goblins and in the main form will also let you jump on enemies. As normal Widget, one hit will kill you (unless you have a shield active which will protect you from one hit) and you can't fire projectiles, but you can do a super punch which ironically is a little more powerful then some of the projectile attacks.
The level design and enemies are different in each level so it's never boring and I find the challenge to be while not as difficult as most SNES Mario games or the DKC games, it's still a fair challenge if you are not prepared. It is at least harder then Rescue Rangers and DuckTales on the NES and I mention those as those two are regarded as major classics.
The controls work just fine. They are very responsive and easy to handle so anyone who wants to try this game should have an easy time getting used to it.
GRAPHICS & PRESENTATION:
It definitely resembles the cartoon to a heavy extent in design and tone. There is not a flaw in the sprite design of any of the characters, the color is correct as well as the appearances. It also stays true to the show by featuring many of the most well known good guys and villains. The villains in this show are Ratchet and his gang (near all of them are in this), Mega Slank, Dr. Dante and Film Flam. The good guys in this game aside from Widget are the elders from Widget's homeworld, Mega Brain who explains your mission before you go on it, Kevin and Brain who are Widget's human friends, and there is Widget's cousin Half-Pint.
SOUND:
The music reminds me of how the show was, it just has that feel to it, it's hard to explain. The sound effects are very cartoony but the show it's self was cartoony so it fits. There are some voice clips in the game like in the beginning you hear a voice clip of Widget done by Russi Taylor which is in decent quality and in the beginning of near every stage, you hear Mega Brain say the "HOO HOO HELLO" line done by voice over Jim Cummings who was his actor on the show. There's nothing for me to really complain about here.
OVERALL:
I really don't know why this game has no memory to anyone, I think it's more underrated then most of the NES games and any other SNES game anyone says. it's not the best platformer of all time like the Mario, Sonic, Mega Man and DKC games are, but it's still a very good game and I highly recommend many of you to give it a try.
