Flying is fun. But that's pretty much it.

User Rating: 6 | Superman Returns PS2
In the beginning, you get a "Wow! This is cool!" feeling.

Basic powers:

Flight - Fly all over.
Speed - Holding down a button will make you go very fast. Using this in flight makes you go extremely fast.
Strength - You can lift almost anything and use it to throw at enemies.
Heat vision - Your long range weapon.
Wind breath - Blow objects and enemies away.
Freeze breath - Freeze enemies and put out fires.

Your first real mission is in Warworld (nope, not in the movie). You are in an arena in which you must fight gladiators. When you see the towers of objects in the arena, it's cool. You have about three columns holding up a huge object on each level of the tower (and about ten levels on each tower). Taking one of the columns out (say, from the bottom level) will make the whole tower come down. Very cool looking and you might just like doing that (instead of actually fighting). The combat will make you feel unbeatable.

Now, after winning in Warworld, you get to roam free in Metropolis. A huge city over twice the size of NYC in Spider-Man 2. Though sadly, you can't tell one building from the next. Except for the Daily Planet building (recognizable only by its golden planet on the roof) and the rare park (one or two has a statue of Superman), everything looks the same. But when you first arrive, it's just cool to fly around. It is amazing to just fly through the city at high speeds. Sadly, that's where the fun ends. When combat comes, you come to the shocking realization that you have no health meter. Nope. You get a city health meter. So you lose once the enemy does enough damage to the city (damaging buildings, blowing up cars, hurting civilians, etc.). Now, the only way to get more "City Health" is by putting out fires, bringing injured people to ambulances (which is always out of reach. The people disappear if you go too far away from them), etc. Oh, you have a meter too. But it combines energy and health. So when you use heat vision, freeze breath, and wind breath, the meter drains. It also drains when you take damage. Oh, but you don't die when it drains. No. You just faint. When you come back up, your meter is back (not to 100% though. You get that by flying up to the sun... or as close to the sun as you can get).

Yes the game is supposed to be based on the movie. But, as I mentioned with Warworld, it hardly does. The only things from the movie are the actor likenesses on the characters, and cut-scenes that seem to be like the movie. That's where the similarities end.

I rate this game 6 / 10 due to the fact that flying can be fun.
