As a big fan of real-time strategy, especially of the swords and magic kind, this game is a real treat for Wii owners

The vast majority of games that are downloadable on the Nintendo Wii are fairly straightforward, whether it be a new age platformer by a no name company, or a rancher game by a huge company, Wiiware games are fairly cut and dry. The only two that I have delved into have thoroughly pleased me, World of Goo, a mind blowing physics heavy puzzler that is both intelligently designed and fun to solve, and this game, Swords and Soldiers. The games side-scrolling, 2D perspective for an RTS game is pure genius. Even though I am more than capable of handling the intense complexity of 2, 3, even 4 different kinds of resources, the games simple focus on gold and mana is all that it needs to get the job done. There is still that extremely delicate balance of spending the right amount of time at the start teching, or possibly deciding to send out some scouts. From there the battles can span from quick and efficient to grueling and time consuming fun. I prefer the latter, having to outwit the VERY diverse races that occur in the game is truly a challenge. I found the Norse race to be the most balanced and fun to play, during the Aztec and Chinese campaign I found it pain stakingly difficult to get to pesky necromancers and the telekinetic mages. With the Norse you can just blast them to pieces with lightning bolts. The graphics and sound of the game do what they are there for, and I found them to be just as appealing as any PC RTS. All in all I found Swords and Soldiers to be a deep, appreciated treat from a game service that only has a few note-worthy games to play. Oh, and the multiplayer is a lot of fun, in the same nature as Castle Crashers, it gets old, but it is a lot of fun for one night with a friend. From that point on you will pop it out every once and a while to have some fun with buddies.
