Simply stunning. One of the best RPG's I have played to this day.
-Story-
Probably my only issue with this game is the fact that it starts off a little slow. However, this is an issue with several games, so I don't hold Tales of Symphonia too accountable for this. After the first hour or two, though, the plot twists and develops in a way that would make M. Night Shyamalan jealous. Overall, expect a good 40 hours of gameplay at a minimum from this game, excluding the wealth of sidequests that are available.
My Score: 9.5
-Graphics-
Crisp, clean. The cel shading is absolutely gorgeous, and it really fits with the fantasy-themed storyline. Once again, a minor complaint, and that is the fact that the characters could be a little more expressive, but as before, nothing really major. The environment is definitely one of the strongest aspects in terms of graphics. It is evident that every setting received meticulous attention to details. As for the attacks and magic, it's obvious they graphically superior when one of the moves actually causes the game to slow down.
My Score: 10
-Soundtrack-
This, I believe, is the game's strongest aspect. The sheer artfulness with which the soundtrack is composed leaves absolutely nothing to be wanted. Often, I actually found myself purposefully stalling battles just so I could listen to more of the soundtrack. Every mood, feeling and event is given a specific track that truly captures the essence of what is happening. Masterful at the very least.
My Score: 10
-Gameplay-
Customization is the buzzword when it comes to Tales of Symphonia. First of all, the Linear Motion Battle System works perfectly for it. It is extremely simple to learn how to use, but the options available with open up enormous possibilities. There are three principle settings for each character: Auto, Semi-Auto, and Manual. Auto is exactly what is appears; each character with this setting is controlled by the AI. This setting is what you will primarily use for your other 3 partners, but there are other options. Semi-Auto is a little weird. You can attack on your own, but other movements are controlled by the AI. Manual setting offers the largest variety of options. Every attack or spell can be mapped to one of the principle buttons, something that is necessary for forming chains. Furthermore, you can control your partners' attacks by mapping their attacks/spells to the C-stick. And if you get tired of the character you are using, don't worry, because it is possible to change characters in the middle of a battle. Overall, extremely comprehensive and engaging.
My Score: 10
-Other-
I feel that something must be said for the wealth of sidequests available. At it's backbone, Tales of Symphonia presents an extremely well-written storyline, but the sidequests are what really fill it out. I can't really go into detail, but completing every sidequest will add several hours of gameplay at the least.
My Score: 10
-Overall-
This is one of those games that leaves a lasting impression on the player. Every detail is executed with such effectiveness that the game becomes less a game, more a work of art. Customizable difficulties ensure that every level of gamer is sure to be satisfied with this game. Overall, a game of masterful quality that leaves absolutely nothing to be desired.
