Like a fighting game with training wheels....

I brought Tatsunoko vs. Capcom back at the peak of release. There was much hype about the game and many folks praising it with a 10/10 before even playing it. Sometimes with certain games it's a self fulfilling prophecy. You trick youself into thinking it's a 10/10 and when you play it you over look its faults so you honestly believe it's a 10/10.

Now that the hype of this game has well worn off I'd like to give a real review of it. After playing this game for hours on end with all controllers including the arcade stick released for it there is one thing that bugs me the most about this game...

That is... that is really too simple. It's hard to say who's good or bad in this game as controls can be simplified down to single push a button super moves depending on what controller your using. This can either be fun or boring depending on what type of player you are. For hardcore players it will be annoying and wear off fast as your opponent will attempt the easy "wins" on you relying on super moves other than actually learning to fight with the character. This happens more often than enough in this game, and with the balancing issues as to where some characters are seemingly more powerful than others it does become a serious flaw of the game.

One of the good things about the game is that it looks great and the artwork is amazing. The characters are extremely well designed and all of their attacks are unique to their characteristics...but with most characters only have but a few set of attacks. With no Punch or kick buttons it comes down to Low, medium, and High combinations wich after a while does get boring pulling off the same combo's with little variation. Even the SF2 games on the Sega Genisis allowed you to have dedicated Punch and kick attacks by allowing you to switch between the two with the select button. Why couldn't the same or something similar have been done here? Variation is what is highly lacking in this fighter.

The core of the game itself is actually pretty decent. Aside from a final boss that's more of a dissapointment and no story to follow to even leave you wondering what your fighting and why there's not much to go on in the main game. However, the stages are okay (nothing too amazing just a backdrop),

The first few times you complete story mode it will be fun, but after a while it's just grinding to unlock items. It makes killing the final boss feel like a chore than something your doing out of enjoyment for the game. After unlocking the characters I wanted I quit that portion of the game.

Online play is hit or miss on TvsC. Non ranked battles offer a bit more excitement and fun to the game as there is no risk for losing... however Ranked matches are an absolute mess. Majorily there is an abundance of players who abandon matches before losing. an exceptional amount of lag, and quite some wait time inbetween matches 2-6 minutes in peak hours.

There really little to protect players against dishonorable players. There's no lobby...no premade matching.... it's just a completely random system. For the Wii's first serious fighter aside from Smash brothers...the Tvs.C Wi-Fi system feels more like a test project than something you would actually release to the public. If there's anything that needs improvement aside from the simple controls of the game it's the Wifi network.

Overall after playing the game for the past month or so the thrill has finally left. This is a great game to play against friends or in your private circle... but online is not something this game excels at.
