Best fight game ever made.

User Rating: 9.4 | Tekken 5 PS2
Tekken 5 is one of the best fighting games that Namco has ever produced, the graphics are stunning, the sound is outstanding; and has great playability. The story follows after Tekken 4, after Jin has given his daddy and grandpa a good thrashing. A number of Jacks crash the party and Kazuya and Heihachi have to fight a gruelling battle. Kazuya manages to escape the battle, while Heihachi desperately calls out to his son for help before the Jacks blow him to bits. He is presumed dead by Wesley Snipes … sorry Raven, and that’s where the game takes off.

The game consists of 33 characters, including old favourites and three additional characters. Raven - a.ka. Blade - a secret agent as well as Ninjistu master, Feng Wei, a Kenpo Expert gone renegade; and Asuka Kazama, a master of the Kazama-style martial art. Old favourites like Bruce, Wang and Baek have returned and have been updated to the improved engine of the sixth instalment.

Each character has been updated considerably in Tekken 5; move lists range to the hundreds, visual improvements have been made such as hair and clothing movements and backgrounds areas that are good looking (One of the areas looks as though it came straight out of Mortal Kombat -confused me a little) . Tekken 5 plays more like Tekken 3, abandoning the sluggish playability of Tekken 4. One aspect that upset me a little is the fact that they took away the interactive background elements, such as hiding around pillars and knocking opponents into them. Not that I’m a cheat or anything, it’s just that they took a little realism out of the game. Even though this element is missing, the game is still a brilliant fight game.

Tekken 5 also has a number of features. Arcade mode, versus mode, team battle, time attack and survival mode have returned as well as two additional modes, Devil Within and Character Customisation. Devil Within is a beat-em up mini game where you play the role of Jin Kazama, running around different areas while beating up characters and given the option of changing into his “Devil State” – copycats. What makes Tekken fun is the character customisation, buying several costumes and dressing up each character to have a unique look – “Kuma looks so cool with his glasses”.

Overall it’s a fun game with outstanding graphics, sound and playability, that will bring you back time after time. Any one who loves fight games or is a hardcore fan of the series should definitely get this title.
