Serving as one of the more impressive showpieces for the handheld, Tekken: Dark Resurrection may also be the best fighting game released for the PSP to date. Specifically, the Namco Bandai brawler offers up all the fun and depth of the latest console Tekken installment, along with some platform-specific perks. The absolute best thing about Dark Resurrection is that it’s entirely seamless. Rarely does a loading screen pop up, and when it does, it’s not for very long. Along with a notable lack of slowdown during combat and some gorgeous CG work in the intro and character endings, this works to create one of the most immersive atmospheres found on any handheld. Graphically speaking, the game is a showpiece, and the driving score is perfectly suited for fast, furious fighting. In addition to the Arcade and Story modes, a number of unlockables--customization options, extra play modes (like Tekken Bowl), and the traditional movie gallery--provide plenty of incentive to keep playing. Each victory, on or offline, nets cash that can be used to tweak a character’s appearance, a cue taken from Virtua Fighter 4, but a very enjoyable one nonetheless. The most appealing feature of this iteration of Tekken, though, is its multiplayer functionality. Players can fight in ad hoc or infrastructure modes, and those worried about connection issues can fight in the Dojo mode, a series of ranked tournaments versus AI ‘ghosts’ of other players. Players can also create their own ghosts, based on their play style, and send them to friends. The PSP has been home to an impressive number of well-made fighters since its launch, starting with a near-perfect Darkstalkers port. Tekken: Dark Resurrection puts them all to shame. Sporting the best graphics the system has to offer, a kinetic play experience unhindered by slowdown or load times, and massive replayability, this Tekken is a must buy for any PSP owner.
