Chances are that you go into Tenchu because you've played previous installments of the series. I must say that upon playing Fatal Shadows for the first time I was very pleased with the opening intro and song. The game has an 80's ninja movie theme all over which is a good variation, but it gets a little tiring after a while. Mainly the chapter summary. The gameplay is good, all Tenchu veterans will be accustomed to the movement of the character. New comers beware that Tenchu is a ninja SIMULATOR so they move more human-like than in other games. It may also be a good idea to point out that characters move slowly while fighting hand to hand, but the ninja experience is enhanced due to the fact that non-ninja enemies move slower and sloppier than ninja characters. The lock-on mode introduced in Tenchu 2: BOSA and Tenchu: WOH is back. This makes boss-fighting easier and bearable, since some bosses tend to be quite tedious but enjoyable as long as you don't get killed and have to start all over. The ability to move bodies that was removed in Tenchu: WOH (Tenchu 2 introduced that feature) is back and it helps a lot to avoid any unwanted attention from the guards, which sadly are still really stupid (but it is for the sake of the game really). Still, it would be real hard to play if being seen once would trigger an extended alarm state. The stealth kill system suffered a minor modification that involves timed button pressing to make it a better stealth kill and receive additional experience. It may be a little frustrating at first but you get the hang of it quickly. The graphics have been refined from previous installments and the character design is pretty good as well, for the playable characters and enemies. Weapons and styles of combat look good, but speed in combat would be greatly appreciated. Also, the stealth kill cutscenes look pretty nice, and the way that the camera focuses at the end is just sweet. The intro music is very nice but the rest of the in-game music is short and sometimes it gets on your nerves. The voice over is nice but the dialog is kind of strange (are'nt all the ninja movie dialogs strange?), the ability to listen to the characters in japanese is very welcome. The sound effects are fair, specially the ones where swords clash. Those could be a little better. Over all, I deeply recommend this game if you like stealth action and feudal japanese themes. In my eyes this game honors the Tenchu series good.
