TDU Review

User Rating: 7.5 | Test Drive Unlimited X360
This'll be just a short review. Now that Test Drive Unlimited 2 will be coming out soon I thought I'd give this game a try and it I wasn't disappointed - there's some things missing which could have, for me, put this racing game into the same league as Forza 2. Could have, here are the reasons:

1. very limited tuning options. You cant tune the car the way you want. You can paint it the way you want, but you only have 3 tuning options for each car.

2. lack of race tracks. You're driving around the island all the time, but there are only a few tracks that can be regarded as race tracks with special layouts. Most of the races are just run of the mill street races.

3. Speaking of races, the AI is strange. It brakes where it doesnt have to, but most of the time it will just drive slowly behind you. At least wasnt annoying for me.

4. the whole hawaii-setting gets a bit boring. At least after playing dozens of hours. maybe they could have made it better by making less streets on the coast and more streets in the mountains with more hairpins, tunnels, snow, all that stuff. Instead you have 200 km of streets on the coast and boring mountain streets except for a few (tartarus race etc.).
The problem is that most of the streets are exchangable, you just have to go straight forward most of the time with a few turns here and there. just not enough variety.

5. The cars that are available are ok - my fav being the aston martin db 4 - but you have like 10 other classic cars and that's it. Or a few sports cars each category. End of the line. Thats not enough. There arent many cars in comparison to forza 2. So the variety could have been better. Where is mazda, audi, bmw, ferrari F50 (!), mitsubishi, toyota (!), etc etc. But each car has its own well designed cockpit which is a big plus in comparison to forza 2. The cockpit thing kind of makes up for this but one things drags down the whole thing. And that's not just "nitpicking", its like Kratos, Niko Bellic, Altair or Solid Snake with a girl voice.

6. Worst engine sound of a car ever. what the heck were they thinking? the saleen engine sound (or whats left of it) is disastrous. If I had to choose I'd rather turn the sound off than hearing that little noise that's supposed to be a sports car with several hundred hp. Other engine sounds suck too, for example 2 Noble sports cars. Some sound neither bad or good. Forza 2 did this better.

Once again I disagree with Gamespot. "Aimless feel" ... why? There are races, side missions that are waiting to be completed. You can determine when you've finished the game. Be it at 100 % or be it at 50 %.

Ive spent 80 hours with TDU and just a few with PGR, which was a disappointment. Yet PGR receives a much better score.
