Best game of its kind.
User Rating: 10 | The Beast Within: A Gabriel Knight Mystery PC
I would say best game ever but there are still very few games which can compete. The story is fantastic, of course, Jane Jensen is a great writer; the characters are dynamic and well rounded, character development is well done, the plot is deep and winding and keeps you guessing as any good mystery game should. It continued well from the first, having many references to the first game, namely a lot about Heinz Ritter and the Ritter family, Saint Georg (remember Gabe's bookstore was Saint George's Books), and the term Schattenjäger is used many times. The acting is great for what's to be expected of an early 90's full motion video type game, and while I was disappointed not to have Tim Curry and his cute Cajun accent in this game, Dean Erickson's portrayal of Gabriel soon grew on me and I was drawn in to the game to the point of worrying about Gabe and playing to the next chapter to find out what happens next. The in game information was also spot-on, the book about lycanthropy was real recorded information, if you've ever looked into the subject, and I'd Google it to put the author's name in here but I'm too lazy and it's quite off topic; the biography on King Ludwig II was correct as well, with a few exaggerations for plot, and his Neuschwanstein Castle was very very close to the real thing, there is actually a tour on YouTube of the real castle if you'd like to check it out. All in all, a lot of work was put into this game and it has a real soul to it that just can't be ignored. I full heartedly recommend this game to anyone who has a computer, a mouse, and 30 dollars to spare -- or a copy of the game at their disposal.
