They got everything right; too bad it sits in a silo, all by itself.
So how come I never play? Simple. It's boring to play the same 50 songs, all created more than 40 years ago. I can play, but after about 25 minutes I'm ready to slap RB2 in so I can play a greater variety of songs. Simply, by isolating the Beatles songs from the RB2 platform HMX has cut these songs off from the "music platform" approach that has served them so well. I'm sure those who handle the Beatles insisted on this stand-alone approach but I think it ruins the entire package. The individual songs in RB are not a great game in isolation; only when combined with the 500+ songs available do they take on their full value. The Beatles Rock Band isolation prevents this from happening with their catalog.
I think HMX miscalculated here. They put all their creative energies into a game that a relatively small percentage of gamers will be interested in. They'd have been better off developing RB3 as the RB2 platform is almost 14 months old now, looks it, and is dire need of upgrading (star tracking anyone?).
A missed opportunity.
