Black Mirror is flawed, but also engaging atmospheric and memorable.
The storyline is very good and offers a lot of twists and turns. Feels partially like a supernatural thriller, partially a murder mystery. You play as Samuel Gordon who after long time returns to his home castle Black Mirror, a very good protagonist i might add. He isn't annoying like most adventure game protagonists, doesn't make lame jokes, yet he is likable and sympathetic. There supporting characters are also quite memorable, whether the inhabitants of the castle, or Willow Creek the nearby village.
The main element that stands out is the amazing atmosphere. The 2D back rounds are very well made,The sound effects and the instrumental music are perfectly combined to create a sense of dread and unease. Even the voice acting fits perfectly, everyone in the game are depressed and moody, and you just sense that bad things are about to happen.
The game has it's share of inventory and practical puzzles. Some are hard enough, nothing too challenging, but you may be stuck because you don't know what to do. The game may become a pixel hunt sometimes, but I've seen much much worse.
The bad things are mostly on the tecnicall side. The character models are not very well, and their movements are sloppy. Also there's this annoying thing where characters tell you to come back later, so you have nothing to do but wonder aimlessly for two minutes before you can proceed with he game. Just needlessly frustrating, easily the worst element of the game.
So in conclusion, Black Mirror II is out now , and if you missed the first game be sure to give it a try. It's atmospheric and memorable, with balanced difficulty and a great story.
