I call it revolutionary but how come it to this day is still the best RPG ever made?

What modern game allows you to travel freely through an entire world (I think the number of cities is over 300k), buy houses, boats, create any character you like and do pretty much whatever you like. Want to live as a thief and rob houses at night? You can do that.

I really wanted this game to revolutionize the rpg industry but I guess it didn't since no one has managed to surpass it to this day. Morrowind was great but a step in the wrong direction, and Oblivion was a huge disappointment to me.

What happened people? Why did true sandbox games die out when they were the biggest games of their time? GTA 4 is barely even a sandbox game by the standard of the old classics like Elite and Daggerfall.

If you didn't have to privilege to play Daggerfall it is probably to late now but you should know the name of the best title by far in the Elder Scroll Series.
