Quite frankly, Oblivion is a game that will eat your time. You will know about it, you will recognize it, you will undertsand it. But you simply will not stop it. People, Bethesda has created that kind of game. A game that will instantly suck you up and almost never let you go. People have complained about some of the systems used in it, such as "leveling doesn't matter" and "save system can be whored", but what I have to say is this: If it can be whored, why are you whoring it? If the game isn't satisfying, why would you try to go around the challenge and get the reward? If it's not rewarding, why are you still playing it? The answer is this: if you choose to whore some of the systems that have casual gamers in mind, then all you're doing is ruining the experience for yourself. The leveling sysytem is one of the most intuitive ideas ever implemented in a game. While Morrowind did it before Oblivion, Morrowind's system was far less stream-lined. What oblivion allows is for the player to do what he/she wants, and the results are spectacular. Oblivion allows you, the player, the one at the center of the experience, to do what you please. The problem is, you might not be good at it. According to Tamrielic lore, Orcs are big, dumb brutes. But as a player, I want my big dumb brute to overcome the stereotype and become something special. I want to live out my character's life and do what he would do. As the player, I can overcome the stereotype and become a special Orc in the gameworld. I can rob the castle in the theives guild and watch townsfolk discuss the next day. Little did they know that it was an Orc!
Many a time have other games tried to cramp you into some personaltiy that is not your own. In this game, YOU have the power to affect the gameworld. Unoriginal, annoying series such as Zelda and Final Fantasy make you follow some ridiculous plot that they have come up with. Oblivion is the game that breaks those shackles of retro gaming and put the player in the center of the experience. The Elder scrolls is one of the greatest gaming series of our time, and Oblivion simply cements that fact down even stronger.
