After the huge success of GTA3 gaming never was the same. Or rather was very much the same with a swarm of GTA Clones. Most of them were poor compared to real thing but one game that looked like it could come into it's own was The Getaway. It was going to be GTA: London 3D or The Long Good Friday: The Game. Sadly this was too good to be true as The Getaway is absolute mess. Obviously rushed, The Getaway attempts to be a more realistic experience. No maps, no health bars, etc. This sounds like a good idea but unfortunatly this only adds to already numerous flaws this game has. The gameplay is a disaster. When in shoot outs you constantly need to find a quiet spot to recover, ruining any sense of excitement. And you actually are in gun battle you must overcome the arkward controls and your player just strols around and can never run. Car missions are even worse. The handling of them is awful and if crash just once it's all over, plus those missions take forever because there is no map! Apart from the gameplay there are hints of what this game could of been. The storyline is most impressive and very well written. The graphics are at times smughy but overall good and the music and voice work is good too. There are plenty of missions and some replay value in roaming around London but the game overall is a sorry mess. GTA: VC indeed put this game to shame and proved GTA clones would never beat the real thing.
