Became old quickly...

User Rating: 7 | The Godfather PS2
For the first few missions it was an exciting time: robbing banks, shaking down shop owners, bribing cops, and having my own part in the Godfather saga...it was great. Though it quickly became old.

The game was progressing nicely and then it seemed to stall. I found myself wondering around aimlessly, getting into trouble, but not really progressing the game play much. I ended up losing interest, something I thought would never happen with anything based on The Godfather. The free range play is not nearly exciting as the story line and I think that spoils the game. Regardless of these feelings I tried to pick the game back up a few times, but every time I tried I could not find a reason to play for very long.

The graphics are not all that impressive, even to PS2 standards. The sound is also lacking, little emphasis is placed on ambient effects so all you're left with is screeching tires and loud gunshots. You get a hold of the controls pretty quickly, I only wish some of the buttons were momentary: for all the games I've played, it is a chore to remember that you click one button to turn the manual aim on and then to release the button and hit it again to turn it off. It almost seems counterintuitive. I really feel this game could have been better, I gave the tilt an 8 because in the beginning I was anxious to play, I was looking for excuses to play this game, and I couldn't get enough. I don't need a non-stop story to keep me happy, I am a HUGE fan of GTA's free-range play, but the Godfather's seems to be slow and less than enticing.
