Addictive and Satisfying Whilst being Innanely Dull.

User Rating: 7.7 | The Godfather PS2
Taking a Classic Movie and Turning it GTA is always going to be hard, and let's be honest, EA tried very hard. However, what they came out with was completely unrealistic in every sense. For example, even in mob war, there are limits to how many people you can kill before there's a major enquiry. Not a problem, hide in a safehouse until the 2000 murder cases go down. I'm going to complain throughout this review, but don't be mistaken, The Godfather is quite a good game. It's addictive, and often fun, yet incredibly repetitive. I did like this game for the first 3 days. After which I had completed the contract kills, main story missions and taken over a fair amount of businesses, but after that, it's just shooting through hoards of enemy families to get to somebody so you can give them money. Let me explain, The Godfather consists of a few main mission types. There are contract killings, in which you go to a specific place, and kill an important enemy family member. Sounds repetitive, but there are special circumstances for each killing, eg, through the target of a bridge, 1 shot headshot only, kill them with a baseball bat etc. They don't last long, but are fun to do. Story missions are another concept. They are basically you helping out the mob by killing certain people, helping other people, driving people to meetings. All original and fun, although when you say story missions, the term "story" is incredibly loose. To be entirely honest, I didn't actually think there was a story, just a few cutscenes which only mattered to that specific mission, and barely any overlapping between these events. Not particularily thrilling. The third and final part to the missions is the repetitive boring one. Taking over businesses by extorting the owners gains you money every week. So does buying out Rackets, or taking over warehouses or hubs. The interiors to these buildings are all similar, and with enough experience you can tell where every enemy will run to and from where. There are a large amounts of fronts (businesses) to extort, and all of them consist of intimidating owners by breaking stuff, killing people in front of them and attacking the owners themselves. Innovative at first, but it gets very quickly dull. Rackets involve you shooting through hoards of enemies until you get to the Racket boss, who you pay off to give you money weekly. Warehouses, and hubs are the same, except with more hoards and less decent cover. All of this is extremely fun for a while, but after a while, you just wish that you can stop, but you're only XX number of fronts away from having them all, and you just have to have them all otherwise you won't sleep properly at night. Yes, that's right, this game does give you insomnia. Overall, I would say this second hand, I got it at £15, and that was a fiver a day, and I'm perfectly happy with that. If you can rent for a week, do that. A fun game to play, but the realism and repetitive-ness is annoying after a few days.
