By the time The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time was released, the Zelda series was allready a highly acclaimed franchise, and this game did nothing more but justify those acclaims. Ocarina of Time was the first 3D title in the series, and many people still claim it to be the best in the franchise, and others go as far to claim it to be the best game of all time. (Including myself:))
What made this game such a masterpiece was it's perfect blend of it's classic storyline, memorable characters, flawless gameplay, and some of the best music and video game could ever have. I myself never get tired of going through this game again and again.
This game also set the trend for Zelda's future 3D titles such as Majora's Mask, the Wind Waker, and Twilight Princess, all of which were masterpieces of their own, and all had a slightly different taste than the other.
If you're a Nintendo fan,or just a gamer in general, and you have yet to play Ocarina of Time, than all I can say is than you're life as gamer is not complete.
