This is what everyone was raving on about?

This game starts you out in the middle of a screen with NO instructions at all. I died while trying to find out what to do. Then found the guy who lives in a black hole in the side of a mountain, who gives you a sword. Then I could fight back. But unfortunately I got swarmed by a bunch of enemies and died. Repeatedly. The controls just feel clumsy to me but I managed to get the hang of it quite quickly.
Then I went round looking for what to do. No explaination, again. So I had to resort to looking on a guide to see what the basic PREMISE was. Turns out I'm meant to look around for some dungeons and kill the bosses. I didn't like the gameplay as you can probably gather by now. I just don't really like that you aren't told what to do. You aren't told anything apart from 'ITS NOT SAFE TO GO ALONE TAKE THIS' and 'ARE YOU GONNA BUY SOMETHING'. I don't like how things will hop around then you have to perfectly move along perpendicular to it to fire an arrow or throw your sword. I also didn't like the high cost of items - you get one... funny shaped monetary object for every monster you kill. If you are lucky. Usually you get jack. Things mostly cost over 60 fsmo.

The graphics aren't very good either even for NES. There are sort of different environments but you'll mostly be looking at beige ground brown rocks for most screens. The sound is the best part of the game. The music is fantastic and memorable. The effects aren't too good though. But they do the job.

Once I got the hang of it, the game got quite good. But I shouldn't have to wonder what to do. I shouldn't have had to go on a guide website and look at a map to see where things were. It's lucky I like the dungeon music.
