With more refinement, Shadows could've been special. But gameplay is too messy to recommend strongly.
In Shadows, you'll embark in your experimental submarine (it's 1945 after all) into the dark watery depths near Antarctica. Your oxygen is limited (requiring a constant search for underwater caverns with air at the ceiling), you'll need to shine your lightsource around in order to see anything at all (providing a sense of mystery and discovery, along with a sense of claustraphobia and plenty of places for enemies to hide) and of course guns and a chainsaw.
Initially, you'll think this is a game of exploration into the depths (Aquaria) but such a judgment would be premature. Soon enough you'll be surrounded by aggrivated aquatic life forms which aren't at all happy to see you glide by. In fact, the sheer number of them will instantly transform this underwater adventure into a space-shooter of sorts. You'll likely have trouble shooting, diving around, and using your light at the same time, which is an unfortunate gameplay fault. Additionally, shooting your weapon uses oxygen (for some unknown reason) which means you'll feel a little desperate at times under the sea.
Unfortunately, the repetitive feel of the combat and the general lack of underwater discovery will likely leave you feeling a little high and dry. Generally, it feels like the game just never quite comes together. That's in spite of some nice graphical representations, which have a nice hand-drawn feel, though the music is generally not great.
At 80 MS points, its hard to complain too much. I think its worth at least that much. However, Shadows in the Underworld will leave you ultimately feeling that, with a little more time and refinement, it could've been a very good game. As is, it's playable but not stellar.
