One of the greatest animated families of all time can't seem to be in a good game.

User Rating: 1 | The Simpsons: Bart vs. the Space Mutants NES
PROS: It has the Simpson's theme

CONS: graphics are terrible to look at, theme repeats itself throughout the game, controls are abysmal, mission objectives are stupid, game becomes hard too fast

The Simpsons are no stranger when it comes to video games based on their success but a vast majority of the games based on this animated family are terrible and just get worse and worse. Bart vs. the Space Mutants falls into that category, with its clunky controls, awful graphics, terrible mission structure, and its ramp up with difficulty too early in the game. The story revolves around Bart trying to stop two space mutants from taking over the world using an ultimate weapon. While the story is cliched the way to power up their weapon is just stupid, it involves collecting certain things like purple colored items, hats, and so on. Each of the stages have the same stupid objective, collect the objects or color them different, it's the same for every mission except the last one and it gets really boring really quick. At the end of each stage is a boss from the TV how such as Nelson or Sideshow Bob but they are not that hard. In the final level you have to stop the Nuclear Plant from exploding by fixing the core and that's really it for the game. Now with a mission structure like that, you will probably think the game is easy but no it isn't the game is really hard from beginning to end, for the wrong reasons. The game has loose and delayed controls in it, Bart takes a few seconds to move or stop moving, the jumping mechanics are hard to get used to, you jump regularly by pressing the A button but there are platforms that require a super jump, to do that you press the A and B buttons together, getting used to that is mandatory but sometimes the jump won't happen due to the delayed controls. The sound is a nice 8-bit theme of the Simpson's but get used to hearing it again and again because it repeats itself all through the game, as for the sound effects, they are cheap and annoying and it will make you turn the volume down. Bart is also the weakest member of the Simpsons apparently, if he gets hit twice, he dies and restarts the level again, if you die three times it's game over, no continues or a password, you can get extra lives but no continues. The game can't even get the graphics right, while they are colorful everything is a jumbled mess, the Simpsons barely look like their TV counterparts, the aliens are complete jokes to look at and do not look anything like what they seem like on the box art, and it takes a while to figure out what's a platform and what isn't. Even if you fixed all that the game is still very hard, there are too many aliens to avoid and there is no way to kill them and the platforming becomes too hard too fast.

Bart vs the Space Mutants is just another bad Simpsons game that is to be avoided. If you want a good Simpsons game, go get Road Rage or Hit and Run, those are far more fun than this, as for this game you are better off letting aliens probe you than play this game ever again.
