Everything was good about the Sims 3 that I can see and I'm no Sims fanatic. This is def. the best to date. I came into this game with no expectations, especially after reading reviews here. Most everything was better than expected, it fixed the few quirks I hated in the Sims 2 (not being able to rotate furniture) and being able to roam freely around town. I even read somewhere where some felt like it was a ghost town....I didn't get that feeling at all, actually there are a lot of people for the small size of the town. I guess you can't please everyone.
The only bad that I didn't like - They've turned Sims items into a market. I just don't like it, which is probably the reason why there are less styles of hair and etc. to be found. So in essence that's a detriment to the game because they're keeping content from us.
I'd say to def. try, as long as you weren't expecting any miracles from this game, you'll be sufficiently entertained, there is much more to do with this one. If you're bored with this one, you should have been bored with the old one...
