it's just the same as all the other sims no real change

I’ve been a hardcore gamer for nearly 20 years. I’ve seen all sorts of titles and genres come of age since then but I just don’t understand the appeal of this game. Basically, the object of the game is to micro-manage the lives of somewhat normal people called “sims.” You can control a number of sims at once or just a single sim living alone. You must find them jobs, build them homes (or move into existing homes), feed them, clean them, and generally keep them happy through a combination of social activity, entertainment, consumer spending and avoidance of hardship. Each sim has unique personality traits and there is an enormous amount of variability in terms of how to direct their lives for maximum happiness.

What I just don’t understand is where is the fun in cleaning a toilet or doing the dishes? Where is the fun in telling a sim to sit and watch TV, read a book, or call a friends over for dinner. Don’t get me wrong. I like watching TV, reading books, and calling friends over for dinner…but I don’t need a computer game for that. I play computer games to either sharpen skills (like in strategy games) or for pure escapism (like in pretty much all other games). This game is a clear example of resource management so in many ways I would classify it as a RTS game but where is the strategy in having to tell the sim over and over again to flush the toilet and wash your hands or you’ll lower your Hygine rating? You would think that they would learn from their own mistakes.

In fact, if I could improve just one thing in this game, it would be to include a script generator to reprogram sims to do routine tasks without having to be asked. Having to constantly command your sims to do the same tasks every day gets very boring for me very fast. I should be able to script a daily routine (get up at 6, shower, eat breakfast, clean up, go to work, [free time], go to bed by 11) so that I can concentrate my efforts on the so-called fun stuff of buying more junk for the house or improving my social ties. I should also be able to write a script like, “Clean shower after every 5 uses.” It’s just too mundane for me to have to ask the sim to do these things every time.

Of all the video games I’ve ever played, this has to be the most boring one.
