Great Platformer for Young Children and Smurfs Fans Alike!

User Rating: 7.8 | The Smurfs PS
This game is a platformer that takes place in Peyo's universe of the Smurfs. Before I get the theme song stuck in my head, let me warn you that this game is cute. This is because the original source material is cute. Smurfs are little, three apple high blue cartoon characters whose existence is marred only by forest animals and the evil Gargamel.

This game has your standard jump and collect mechanism, with the addition of some interesting "puzzles" where you must find one item to combine with another to make a door open or a flower spit you to a higher platform. The graphics look like a hand drawn cartoon, and the character's voices sound like those from the cartoon. Overall, very impressive for PS1 hardware.

My favorite part of the game is the "child" mode, which enables children to play without having to worry about a health meter. If it takes them 45 attempts to learn how to complete a level, they do not have to keep restarting the game. I played with a 4 year old, and he loved not dying every 20 minutes. It also gave him the confidence to try the adult mode. I think more games would benefit from having a child mode, which would be easy to implement by just removing the functionality of the health and life meters, or by simply invoking an invincibility code.
