Gotta get out, one way of another.
WARNING: Lots of foul language in this one, and blood to. Haven't seen any real gore yet, but very messy, violent gameplay, so be prepared.
For some reason, I keep coming back to this one. It's got a gritty, drive-you-forward-with-violence feeling to it.
The overall premise of the game has you, the player, in the role of a death row inmate in a horror island prison. All hell breaks loose (litterally) and you must now escape. One of the more original aspects of the game is its use of an insanity meter. As you defeat enemies, the meter (once opened by progress early in the game) increases. When it is full, you can transform into a huge creature to deal real damage. You can revert back at any time, but once your insanity meter reaches 0, your life bar begins to drop. Any kills you get while changed increases an insanity exp bar. Each time you max this out, you recieve a more powerful smash move (just hit jump).
Game mechanics are similary to Siphon Filter or Mercenaries (standard 3rd person shooter). The environment is very appropriate for generating that survival horror feeling, and the monsters were actually designed by FX studio or some such, and based off of various toture/execution methods, so it stays true to the theme.
As mentioned before, there is quite a bit of swearing in this game. I wouldn't call it over-done, given the setting, but parents who care should keep this out of the hands of the young'uns.
I call games like this brain-breaks. Deffinitely a renter, unless you find it on the cheap.
So have fun, break out of jail, shiv a demon or two on your way!
