"Warriors Come Out And Play"

User Rating: 8.5 | The Warriors PS2
One thing that Rocktar is fantastic at is making successful games based on crime, and The Warriors is no exception. The game is based on the 1970s classic about a group of gangsters (The Warriors) from Coney Island that try to prove that they are the strongest gang in town. The game is actually a prequel to the movie, showing how the gang from Coney Island was formed. The atmosphere of The Warriors really makes you as feel as though you are playing a game based on the 70’s.

The music, the Afros and the design of characters and environments make the whole experience seem so real and enjoyable. The thing I love about Rockstar, is their use of adult content that other gaming companies are afraid to use. The harsh language and great voice acting in the game is very amusing, believable and also adds to the effect that these are “hardcore gangsters” that don’t mess around.

The combat system of this title is nice and simple, consisting of basic combos, grabbling moves and special moves that can be performed when in an enraged state. What also makes it friendly is that the player automatically locks on to the enemy or can manually choose whom to attack. There are some issues with the camera angles but won’t effect the game play much.

What’s also cool about this title is that it uses a number of GTA: SA features. You can put tags on rival gangs “turf” to unlock additional features, steal car radios and break into shops to get some cash to buy spray paint, weapons and drugs (which heals the player … bad influence on the kids), mug bystanders for a little extra cash, take on smaller tasks from gang members and beating up rival gangs and cops (my favourite).

The game also has a number of multiplayer features that allows friends to duke it out, old school. There is the basic one on one mode, gang versus gang mode, king of the hill and many others to unlock. The most enjoyable is the cooperative campaign mode where you and your pal can go through the game’s story together. There are also tons of unlockables that will keep the player busy for hours.

Even though you have never seen the movie before, the game is still enjoyable. If you are a fan of beat-em ups like Final Fight, a fan of the GTA series and like to bust skulls, then you should check out this title.

Can You Dig It, Can You Dig It, CAN YOU DIG IT.
