Having never played previous Thief games and being a fan of the stealth action genre, I decided to give the latest installment in the Thief series a try. The medieval setting is a pleasant departure from the slew of stealth action games with a modern day setting. Controls: The controls are standard fair for stealth action games. The default view is in third person but you can also toggle to first person by pressing the back button. You move with the right thumb stick and camera is controlled with the left. The controls are responsive and smooth. Sound: The sound is done well in the game using Dolby 5.1. Ambient sounds, subtle music appropriate for the condition and the voice acting throughout levels provide the game with plenty of atmosphere. Graphics: Graphics are the strongpoint of the game. Considering the stealth based game play, the excellent use and implementation of dynamic lighting is a necessity and done really well. Textures and character models look good for the most part. The character animations suffer a little - like they are incomplete or missing frames. There is also some minor clipping issues when hiding in the shadows, but it doesn't detract form the game play too much. However, the main character Garrett animates well and reminds you of Sam Fisher from Splinter Cell. Overall, Thief: Deadly Shadows is a great game. Game play has enough variety to it and the game is long. Graphics and sound are excellent and compliment each other with the medieval setting. Worth a rental, a definite pickup especially fans of the stealth action genre that are looking for a departure from the modern and futuristic stealth based games.
