I played the Titanfall beta, and after it was over, I was left wanting more. I'm very pleased with the finished product. I'm not typically heavily into online multiplayer in FPSs, but this one does a great job of mixing things up.
Graphics: 8/10 The environments are beautifully rendered, as is the level of detail in the Titans. My only complaint here is that there is a large amount of screen tearing which detracts from the experience.
Sound: 10/10 The voicework is done well and the music is nicely orchestrated, especially in the opening introduction of the game. The weapons sound great and the soundscape works together with the gameplay to create an atmospheric environment which is often chaotic.
Control: 10/10 The controls feel as if they're directly torn from Call of Duty. Players who are familiar with standard FPS controls will find nothing to complain about here. When you're in a Titan, it's a natural extension of you-- Titan movement is generally very fluid and intuitive.
Content: 7/10 I find that online multiplayer in FPSs can get mindless-- Titanfall remedies this by providing a vast array of ways you can play the game. From rampaging around in your Titan, to staying on foot and using your Titan as a sentry, to riding on the back of another Titan, this game mixes things up nicely. The number of ways to fight is varied, too.
The mix of Titans and players on foot also creates great balancing. I tend to do not-so-well in online multiplayer, and I have to say that this is the most accessible multiplayer I've ever played. Everyone gets a chance to get into a Titan, allowing for a good score. I'm happy that the developer based your access to a Titan on a timer and not on the number of kills you get.
The multiplayer takes on several flavors, one of which is the Campaign Multiplayer-- this throws traditional single-player elements into the mix, such as characters, mission objectives, voiceover, and storyline, creating a great atmosphere.
I only have a few complaints here--
1. Respawn has missed a great opportunity. They've presented a fresh approach to online multiplayer-- while they were at it, they could have created an innovative single-player campaign to match.
2. They should have included a pure infantry deathmatch mode, with no Titans, for multiplayer purists. They also should have included a free-for-all mode.
Overall Score: 9/10
