Leaves you wanting more... sort of. Was it meant to be this casual?

User Rating: 7 | Titanfall PC

By no means is this a BAD game, and giving it 7/10 (PC) is really the BEST case, and I kind of feel bleh about marking it so "high". 6.5 feels unfair just because it DOES have potential, but unfortunately, that's what most of the game is, potential.

The groundwork is there, the platform is there, but the game is 'small' for 50gbs of installation. This game could be amazingly huge, and it sucks that it's not.

CONS:

1 - Story: It's there TECHNICALLY, but after playing the MP campaign, I was too focused on actually playing to be able to give the story dialogue the attention it might deserve. Thus by the end of it, I recall a few details about a betrayal, destroying some resource and recovering some seemingly arbitrary item... or person... who knows, and that's it; no names, places, or memorable moments. Additionally, the story is entirely "told", and none of it is experienced. The most "interaction" (as far as objectives) you get out of the campaign is trying to evacuate at the end of a round, which is just a normal part of most of the MP matches anyway. There are no campaign/mission specific objectives, it simply pits you into a determined MP match and then narrates story to you throughout the fight which you're probably too busy playing to be able to pay attention to.

2. - Challenge: This is a CASUAL game. One should not expect to enter this game with any hopes of "achievement" or accomplishment. The game is not "difficult" by any measure EXCEPT your opponents skill. This would be fine except that 6v6 on fair sized maps for the game style means that you can have matches (more often than not) where you do not encounter human players enough to make you think you're actually playing a MP game. THEREFOR, it is difficult to be challenged by them, until you eventually do run into someone. Unfortunately sometimes the firefight leaves you annoyed or disappointed because of the way the hit detection works. I have emptied half a clip into someone only to have them one shot me suddenly. Then watching the kill cam shows something occurring that just wasn't the same on my screen. This only happens SOMETIMES and is really dependent on host/connection. A shame, and although it's not OVERLY prominent, I've noticed it enough to warrant it being pointed out.

3. - cont' - Getting a Titan: You are basically guaranteed 3 Titans minimum in every match if you just sit there an do nothing. You have a short timer (which is nicely done, and I love the update you get via audio transmission on how long before it's available), which you can accelerate, and that's all there is to it. This is a con because it takes away from the awesomeness of having a Titan, just sit around or run around in circles until your timer comes up if you were so inclined, 3 times per match every match... This is a PERSONAL feeling for this being a con, I'm sure however that there may be players who believe this to be a PLUS, this is merely a reflection of my PERSONAL opinions, as I would rather earn and relish getting a titan through more effort, a feat or some reward as opposed to guarantee.

4. - A.I./Bots: If you don't encounter opposing pilots (players) much, then A LOT of the "action" CAN be just the AI, which is terrible by anyone's standards. They act much like target practice, you see them, they pop up, look at you waiting to be shot, if you take more than about 2-3 seconds (which is a LONG time in a fast paced shooter like this) they'll take some pot shots at you. The end.

5. Installation: 50gb. Enough said. (For those whom that isn't enough: The 50gb does not include extra content, the graphics are not by any standard technically demanding or pushing boundaries (i.e. to accuse quality textures, shaders, etc); I have seen people refer to the requirements for running Titanfall being that it can be run by a toaster. Made me giggle. So what the hell are these 50gb for? I have an entire 1TB drive dedicated to installing games: Dragon Age (20gb), BF4 (36gb), SimCity (3.4gb), Borderlands 2 (10.5gb), Skyrim (13gb), TotalWar Shogun 2+exp (23gb), the list goes on, D3, Dishonored, Thief, Witcher 2, FFXIV, SC2, ETC ETC ETC all no where near that size). *shrugs*

6. Content: The biggest CON and basically what COULD really just make this game. More content, more weapons, more gear, there is so much potential for more choices in customization, ordnance, shields, tech, and just variety in general, etc. As the game CURRENTLY is, you can experience BASICALLY everything it has to offer in the first night of play. Which leaves me wanting more and leaves me with a bit of difficulty convincing myself to load it up for another round.

Therefor at best, with the current content it's a very CASUAL game, and THIS MIGHT BE a pro for some/many people. For me it is not BECAUSE, with the pricetag, 4-8 hours of play does not cover the limited entertainment value provided (on a cost/hr calculation).

7. Destruction: Does not exist... there are basically no destructible environments. At best you can hack some turrets. But your C4 OR your Titan won't damage or destroy simply tin roofs or homes or fences, etc. Which is rather disappointing, especially in 2014. It's not like destructible environments is new territory. It has and can be done, and with all the hype, Titanfall should definitely contained this feature to promote an industry standard.

PROS:

1. Graphics: They are nice, albeit no optimization for SLI, but meh since most single cards will demolish max settings. (mind you, more than 2gb of VRAM is needed for the "insane" textures to avoid spiking during play as it switches out textures). But the difference between insane and very high is negligible anyway so. Setting AA outside of the game really does make it look excellent. It's smooth and loads quick enough (off an SSD anyway).

2. Casual: As mentioned in CONS point 6 above, HOWEVER, at the same time: It's easy to get into the game and it is a lot of fun, if the lack of content is not an issue and if you find that you have no troubles motivating yourself to play the game. Especially if you're time lacking. Jump in, have a few rounds, call it a night. The rounds are all timed (from my experience) to 10 minutes win or lose. So you won't feel guilty or pressured to start a match thinking "am I gonna have to bail halfway through? :(".

3. Gameplay: It runs SMOOTHLY, it feels good, the movement, the running around and jumping. At no point did I feel like "this should have worked", or "that seems stupid". You know you have a jetpack, so you go for some of the more daring moves, and most of the time it works, which is awesome, makes you go "heh" and you then keep playing, trying more and more of what the jetpack has to offer.

4. Titans: Are awesome fun. Despite them being so easy to acquire, once you do they are fun. You may have read that it is easy to lose them, this is true yes. They aren't entirely beasty and indestructible. They have enough firepower to show a clear distinction between pilot and mech. The fact that they are "easily" destroyed comes down to individual skill and use. Think of them as glass cannons. If you don't play 'wisely' you will lose it. Furthermore seeing a Titan, although forcing you to feel a little more cautious and trying to stay out of sight to avoid being 1 shot killed by a 40mm cannon, you can EASILY double jump with your jetpack, and 'rodeo' it for a takedown. You don't need a Titan to destroy a Titan, but it's more fun that way! I would attribute this to good balancing.

TLDR/ In Closing:

Titanfall is fun and you should try it. But definitely TRY it first. if a friend has it, play it for about 10 matches. You'll experience BASICALLY everything there is to experience at which point you'll decide if it's for you. Don't let the "potential" of the game fool you however, there is a "season pass" available boasting extra maps and what not, but just because there is potential does not mean it will be realised.

While I was playing Titanfall, I distinctly remember feeling a nostalgic urge to play Tribes and Mechwarrior. And really in my opinion, that's what Titanfall is. It's Tribes meets MW all in one but with less detail/content/depth. Fortunately for me, both Tribes Ascend and MWO are F2P (literally, all content accessible without money), and thus my disappointment with Titanfall is that it did not have enough to offer me to make me want to come back to play it over these other titles which it is so reminiscent of.

7/10 FEELS generous to me, but I can't deny it is a (definitely) fun and perhaps even "good" game. It's decent. But that's all. It isn't all that it's hyped up to be. It has potential and hopefully it becomes realised in the future. My biggest suspicion is that like MOH, Tribes Vengeance and other such examples, it will die off due to lack of content and lose its player base. The consequence of this being that it will be completely unplayable without other players to play with as it is an online only title.
