Toca race driver 2 does what racing games very and I mean very rarely do. It has an in depth story and not only that, it has an interesting, well conceived storyline full of great cutscenes and genuine humour. The story serves to make the main game mode a lot more exciting because you feel like you need to win. The story follows you as an up and coming rookie driver with a good deal of potential who is driving for a team struggling for cash. As the story progresses you move into bigger and better classes of racing and turn around the fortunes of your cash strapped team on your way to stardom. The story is really just a way of incorporating all the masses of racing types into one mode and getting you to try them all on for size. It has something for every type of racing fan. The cgi cutscenes are great in terms of graphics and the script is planned well and implemented to perfection. Aside from the story you can race in time trials, free race, single tournament and also multiplayer both on and offline. Now down to the actual racing.
The cars handle as you would expect or possibly as you might not. They all feel realistic to drive and require a certain degree of skill. It's definitely not a game to just pick up and play every now and then. The cars are still fun to drive which is a major plus point because there's no point having realism if it isn't fun. To add to the realism the cars can crash and the game has realistic damage phyics. You'll lose wings, bodywork and wheels, it all depends on the degree of impact. You'll keep coming back for more which is a testament to the games lengthy lifespan and high level of quality. You can tell that a lot of effort was put into making it and in my opinion it is a lot better than the Gran Turismo series. In conclusion racing fans will adore Race driver 2 and it's accesible enough to draw non fans over to the genre. One of the best games on the ps2.
