Two hip-hop-fueled aliens crash, and must find the pieces of their ship scattered throughout various planet levels. 2P
When beginning a game, you choose between a Random or Fixed planet, providing more replayability if you'd like it to be Random and everchanging.
There is also a mode where you can "jam" with the ToeJam and Earl crew to selectable backgrounds & sound effects.
Along the way, they collect presents, that give them the ability to attack the level's enemies, reveal the entire level on the map to easilier find the elevator, run faster, fly, replenish their health supply, and other things that can't be done without the aid of a present.
When playing on Two Player mode, the game varies between a full screen and a vertically-split screen depending on whether or not the players are near one another.
The enemies vary as you progress through levels, some containing ship parts (a notice will alert you if they do) and some without them, simply for collecting cash to purchase presents from blue postal boxes and readily available presents scattered throughout the levels.
The inbetween levels that don't contain parts are simply an obstacle whereas you must find the elevator to proceed to a level that does contain parts.
ToeJam & Earl is a unique game where you must avoid pitfalls & unusual enemies to collect all ship parts and enjoy the game's ending and short after-game freeplay mode, and I recommend it for its unusual charm, fun two-player mode, and lovable ahead-of-its-time sound effects, including the character's voices.
