Brett's Ghost recon 2: Summit Strike review

User Rating: 8.4 | Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon 2: Summit Strike XBOX
Well how to start, I bought the game about 2 days ago when i traded in THPS:4, i have played it a fair bit since and decided to review it fairly quickly (I really liked what i saw and since i have a VERY short attention span I wanted to review it before i got bored of it). The missions are typically tough, as they are in most Clancy games, and the AI seems to have been bumped up a notch. Though I notice that sometimes ordering a team-mate to take out a vehicle can be painful and a do-it-yourself attitude is better. The graphics are superb, as always, and the blinding glare from explosions and bullets whizzing past your ear accompanied by convincing sound effects make the experience all the richer. The controls are tight and responsive although the learning curve is a bit longer than most other games of the genre. I found myself making my men advance into enemy territory a lot more than the original game thanks to the use of the Y button as a quick command control as opposed to in Halo 2 where it is "switch weapon" (old habits die hard), but that is no reflection on the necessity of this feature, which is a fantastic new asset to the series. The game modes are all fun and demand a certain amount of self-discipline. I especially love the Lone Wolf game-mode, where you can use airburst grenades and call in artillery to take out armor for you. Heli Hunt is the most satisfying though, you have to scramble for cover and reload points whilst having two mini-guns pump the concrete/grass/snow around you full of piping lead. When your rocket hits home and blows the chopper out of the sky it is very satisfying. The sounds take you into the game but the voice of captain Mitchell is a bit irritating, as he always seems to want to get the meaning across by talking as loudly and harshly as possible. (think solid snake with hearing problems) Overall this title is (dare i say it) better than the original GR2 and for $50 (Australian) It is well worth the cash.
All Squad Shooter fans, this is a must-have for you. Newcomers to the series may find it somewhat unsuitably challenging.
Thanks for reading.
