I'm usually against remakes, but Anniversary is quite refreshing.
Lara is on the hunt for a mysterious artifact known as the Scion. Her journey begins in the snow-covered mountains of Peru.
I always review my games on what I see first and graphically the game is flawless. Even on the PSP, the environment is gigantic and spaceous without feeling boxed in. The graphics show off the gorgeously designed set pieces and extras such as snow, sand, flowing water and even lava (it's the little touches that are the best). I frequently forgot I was even playing Anniversary on the PSP with the size of some levels. One level was set in Egypt and required the player to judge the amount of water filling a room with two enormous Egyptian statues to climb, shimmy and acrobat across.
Gameplay is solid enough to keep you entertained for a good few hours with the story taking place across plenty of locations like Egypt, Greece and others. The puzzles are well thought out and not too difficult as the clues are right in front of you, just using common sense will prevail them. Some puzzles involve Lara using the exact quantities of water in a cylinder shaped room in order to accesss previously unreachable rooms. The enemy A.I is pretty good, animals will ferociously attack Lara when in view and back off to attack again. The only problem with this is if you leave a room, they won't chase you, just stand in one place. Combat overall is thrilling enough and the slow motion technique is easy to use and doesn't really pose any problems.
Boss battles are astounding. My favourite has to be the updated battle with the old T-Rex. None of the bosses are that hard to defeat. Again, it is about using common sense rather than simply firing bullet after bullet to take them down, which is an improvement over previous bosses in past TR games.
My only problems with Anniversary is a couple of things that still haven't been rectified yet: the main trouble is the awkward camera. It seems to run off when you need it most, resulting in Lara missing ledges or jumps because the camera won't lend a hand. It also would be nice to give a sense of suspense when collecting ammunition. All weapons have that much ammo, you never feel the senseof danger knowing you have a rucksack full of guns and bullets.
Overall the game is a gem to play with only one or two hitches that upset the story slightyly but nothing that would cause you to give up on the game completely.
