yep, i know. i made an article about my initial impressions with Tombi 2, & gave it a 5/10. but as i've reviewed the first Tombi, let's go over the 2nd one, & you'll probably see me talking about it in a better light.
if you played the first game, & didn't like it, Tombi 2 isn't worth your time. but that's not to say it doesn't try anything new. it tries a subtitle. yes, in North America, the game has the subtitle of: 'The Evil Swine Return'. why don't we have that? but i guess it's compensation for them having the worse title.
where Tombi used 3D objects for its environments, Tombi 2 is entirely made up of 3D models. characters are now fully 3D, which i believe is because the game incorporates the third dimension in the gameplay. it's not a true 3D platformer or anything, but it focuses a lot more on switching between dimensions, done more so with different platforms, or platforming challenges.
with everything being 3D models now, it's expected that the art style would be tweaked a fair bit. things have more defined, easily visible, black outlines, & generally, slightly darker shades & colours are used for everything. & for some reason, Koma Pigs (the antagonists of Tombi) are purple now. huh. as for the music, i really like the relaxed conversation music. aside from that, it's a video game soundtrack. there are some good songs, i like the music, but nothing i've heard from Tombi 2 is nearly as memorable as some of the first game's soundtrack. not to say it's bad, or anything of the sort, because it's really not. 'Town of the Fishermen' has a good, upbeat song that fits the stage well. it isn't 'Village of All Beginnings' or anything, but it is good. 'Coal-Mining Town' sounds oddly Egyptian, & 'Underground Mine' sounds like it was made by Michael Jackson. & considering 'Hydrocity Zone: Act 1' is my favourite Sonic song, i'd say that's a good thing.
in terms of gameplay, aside from the focus on 2.6D(©2024, NSegaXP), Tombi 2 is much like the first one. explore your way through each of the levels, going through dimensions & passing platforming challenges, talk to people, collect items, find where you need to use those items, meet Father Christmas, the works. wait, what? yeah, you get to meet Father Christmas. something Tombi 2 does introduce is some different suits that Tombi can wear that give him special abilties, such as a pig suit to make him not get attacked, & sometimes even socialise with, actual pigs, or a flying squirrel suit so that he can glide after a jump. but yeah, Tombi 2 adds its own stuff to make it special, but overall, it sticks to the Tombi formula.
also, there's some pixie thing that hangs around Tombi, & just so happened to teach me how 'Tombi' is pronounced. but either way, i don't care that it's "Tome-bee", i'm saying it as "tom-bee", & you can't stop me. now, how about a Tombi 3? or at least a Tombi ROM hack with new levels? eh? pleease...
