Anyone who likes platformers should play Tomba! 2- for its extremely well-crafted all around.

User Rating: 9 | Tomba!: The Wild Adventures PS
Tomba! 2: The Evil Swine Return is a 2.5D platformer and sequel to Tomba!, which was a 2D platformer also on the playstation. It must be said right here, Tomba 2 is a very good platformer in its own right with all of its virtues, and platformer fans should definitely play this one.

The game's title basically gives away the main premise of the story. It all starts when Tomba gets a letter from his childhood friend Tabby stating that she's been kidnapped. So Tomba sets off to Tabby's home islands to find her, and once again defeat the evil pigs in the process. The story is extremely basic all matters considered, so don't expect any real twists. It does serve as enough of an excuse to go about the land and complete all those quests you find.

Just like in the original game, Tomba 2 isn't as straight forward as most platformers tend to be. Tomba 2 uses a quest system, so while you only have to complete the main story quests to win the game, there are dozens of secondary quests to undertake as well. These secondary quests can provide you with all sorts of benefits- generally new items or special services that you can use later.

In the game world, Tomba is capable of all the general platforming moves. He has a variety of attacks as well using various weapons he can equip, and jumping on enemies so you can toss them away, even at other enemies as well. The game features a wide variety of weapons, and most have their uses, though you'll probably not use the standard non-elemental weapons all that much except early on when you have no other options. Despite being in full 3d graphics though, Tomba 2 restricts you to pre-set areas that can be accessed, as if it were a 2D game. While this will undoubtedly feel a bit old-fashioned to most players, it ultimately doesn't harm the game that much, as the environments are still interesting to explore.

Graphically, Tomba 2 looks great. Its graphics are polygonal compared to what we've got today, but for that time period, the graphics were high quality with surprisingly highly-detailed character models and good animation. The environments are varied in theme and colorful, and look just fine. Sound wise, Tomba 2 does a good job with the sounds tomba makes, along with those of the pigs. The voice acting for the characters who actually talk (unlike Tomba) is generally of decent quality with only one or two lackluster performances in the entire game.

Tomba 2 is a well-crafted game, all matters considered, and any serious gamer who likes platformers should check it out.

Pros: Enjoyable main storyline backed up by dozens of secondary quests. Excellent graphics.

Cons: Unenjoyable boss fights.

Recommendable for: Fans of the original game should relish in this one, and most platformer fans should check it out as well.
