User Rating: 8.7 | Tony Hawk's American Wasteland PS2
The latest installment in the Tony Hawk series adds some new tricks, new levels, new characters, and a new storyline to the series. This game doesn't boast any out-of-this-world graphics or gameplay, but recycles the best of the Tony Hawk series. It feels like Tony Hawk's Underground 3: California Style. The game puts you in the shoes of a new skater arriving to L.A. looking for nice competition and ending up getting his things stolen and joining a bunch of slackers in their quest for ultimate destructive glory. L.A. is said to be one giant area, yet it feels like going from place to place involves also passing through a parking lot, airport, subway station, etc. It's an okay effort, but it needs work if they plan on creating awesome full cities in the next game. The soundtrack isn't as good as Underground 2's, but does provide a great mixture of punk, metal, and rap. Overall, the character customization has been dumbed down since the last game, with more "skate appropriate" articles of clothing (I prefer creating a geen/blue skinned skinny dude with black shorts and hair. That's it, no shoes or shirt. But that's just me.).
Overall, THAW is a solid and imperfect Tony Hawk game. Those who are nostaligic would also want to check out the Classic mode.
