A fun action game that'll appeal to "Gears of War" fans.

A lot of stuff blows up real good in "Transformers: Fall of Cybertron", a third-person shooter in the tradition of "Gears of War". So if you're a fast-paced action junkie, then you're in for a surprising treat. I haven't played any of the previous games in the series, but developer High Moon Studios (Darkwatch, Deadpool) has crafted an exciting entry that caters to both newbies and long-time fans alike. Most of the characters that appear are from the 80's cartoon series, but the epic action seems to have been inspired by the live-action Bay films. Storywise, the subtitle says it all. This game features the Autobots and Decepticons at war during the last days of the planet Cybertron.rnrnGameplay borrows much from "Gears of War" with its fast-paced shooting and cinematic scripted events. Each of the 12 levels clock in about an hour long and are played from the perspective of both Autobots and Decepticons. Additionally, each character has their own special ability and there is an extensive and creative arsenal of high-tech weaponry.

As you progress, you'll be able to upgrade firearms and equipment at "vendor" stores. Currency is earned through destroying enemies and backstory can be found in audio logs scattered throughout the expansive, yet linear levels.rnrnThe Transformers cannot take cover but are extremely mobile. The ability to transform slightly changes the dynamic of the action. And that extends over into the multiplayer as well. "Fall of Cybertron" features both cooperative and competitive online play. The former takes form of the popular "Horde" mode with similarties to one featured in "Mass Effect 3" in terms of the customization. Transformers can actually be customized in both co-op and competitive modes. You can change the body frame, face, color and armor of your solider. Meanwhile, the competitive modes featured here are traditional fare. Team Deathmatch, King of the Hill and Conquest are available and the loadouts and perks made popular in "Call of Duty 4" appear here as well (in some variation). Multiplayer maps are of the "Halo" variety.

FOC's graphics run on the Unreal engine and they are impressive. The top notch visual presentation is accompanied by great sound. The voice acting by Peter Cullen (reprising his role of Octomus Prime) and cast is impressive and the musical score is epic and quite cinematic. "Fall of Cybertron" ranks up with the "Gears of War" in terms of its quality. If you've had enough of Marcus Fenix adventures and want to saddle up for another awesome shoot 'em up, then "Transformers: Fall of Cybertron" is for you.

Pros: Great presentation (sound/graphics are top notch). Satisfying weapons. Fun, fast-paced shooting. Multiplayer is surprisingly robust.

Cons: Overall, the action is extremely familiar. Lacking innovation.
