I took a chance on this game...and was pleasantly surprised!!

I took a chance on this game, because I know the first one was meant to be disappointing. I have read the reviews on Gamespot to date and they are either from people who loved transformers when they were younger or they hadn't played multiplayer. This review is from a neutral perspective and yes I have played the whole game from the single player campaign to the online 4v4 multiplayer:)

To begin with the controls take a bit of getting used to. For example you transform into vehicle mode only to slam straight into a building and you have to turn back into a robot before you get back on track. At first I also thought that there the different things you could do with the robot were limited, but there are some clever touches which could have been issues you pull the right trigger to engage your vehicle mode and pull the left trigger to engage weapon mode.

Each transformer has two different weapons they can shoot from standard cannons to missiles and grenade launcher types, some can be charged up to be more powerful. This seems a little basic but you also have your melee attack, which can in turn be charged up and be more powerful. Additionally you can perform advanced attacks when exiting vehicle mode. It all adds up to quite a complex array of attacks and that's not mentioning the unique special attack each transformer has too!.

The AI is pretty intelligent in the single player campaign, and you can play from both the Autobots and the Decepticons perspectives which is something you couldn't do in the first one. There are your usual boss fights which can be pretty epic and you can eventually chose which transformer to play each mission as once you unlock them. The campaign is enjoyable especially once you do unlock your favourite transformers.

The multiplayer is something which has impressed me greatly. Once you play through a campaign or at least most of it you should have a good enough handle on how to maneuver and fight to be able to take on other players. The 4vs4 matches lets you play as any of the transformers and there are a number of different game types, as standard: Deathmatch, Team Death Match, Battle of the Shards (a variant of capture the flag), and Control points. There is also 'one shall stand' which sees both teams trying to kill the others leader to prevent them from respawning. Its all great fun and the skills you have learned from playing the single player really come into play. It is particularly enjoyable playing with other human controlled transformers and you become immersed in the whole idea. The only complaint I have to date is that they have only 4vs4 games and not more room for more players.

To be honest I took a big chance in buying this game because its different to the usual shoot em ups or action adventures out there. But this game is refreshing and addictive. If you did enjoy the films and fancy yourself taking on the mantle of a transformer like I did then I would buy this. I was pleasantly surprised and I's sure you will be too! I can't get enough of it and I cant wait for more...
