Lacking in Features, but Easy to Play

User Rating: 8.5 | Triple Play 2002 XBOX
I picked Triple Play 2002 for my first shot at video game baseball, and while I realize that there is much to be desired as far as features (no franchise mode, for instance), the game is easy to pick up and is quite fun. Into my first season I have upped the difficulty (Rookie is far too easy after a few games) but found that the changes can be quite dramatic. The difference between Rookie and Pro for fielding is pretty significant, and you'll find yourself struggling to make plays on defense for a few games. The graphics, sound, and game play are all well done (remember this is 2002).
My only real complaint with Triple Play is the dramatic moments that are sometimes forced on you. At key moments during a game you may be shown a short "cut-scene" in which the music picks up, and the key players are shown up close. This signifies that a big moment is coming up, and can be a real obstacle to get past. For example, I hit a tie-breaking home run after one of these moments, and in the same game faced one for the opposing team. To avoid giving up a big run and allow a tie in the ninth, I threw to 2nd. The result was an error and the tie run coming in. I think that if you face one of these moments, there is little you can do to get out of it.
