The new MVC game, slightly missed the mark.
When i first played it, i only got in 10 minutes of gameplay with my mates before i had decided this game was NOT as good as the others.
I'm a massive Darkstalkers fan and have multiple characters tattooed, and the thing i was looking forward to the most was seeing them in 3D for the first time which didn't disappoint. The other Capcom characters and the Marvel ones also look superb especially when you compare the SF roster to the old EX games. The problem didn't lie in the presentation or the level design as both are beautiful, and most the old mechanics have made a return such as the teams and the game modes. The problem lay in the fact it WAS 3d, why you ask? Because when they decided to make it 3d they made the characters more fluid than their 2d counterparts, more combos, more actions and more special moves.
Now let me elaborate on this, the problem doesn't lie in say the SF roster or the Darkstalkers one, and some of the Marvel. It lies in some of the new additions. Dante is the best example and i was really looking forward to his inclusion in this game but anyone can wipe out an entire team with him just by hitting the buttons as hard as they can and to be honest i hate the term 'button bashing or mashing' but we all know that most the 3d beat em ups can be won with a complete newbie just mashing the pad and its possible to do this in MVC3. It feels like tekken with GOOD characters.
In summary, the characters look GREAT in 3d especially Morrigan and co, the level design is beautiful and the game modes are faithful to the previous games, but the playability has gone down a LOT since some of the characters are now FAR MORE overpowered than some of the others simply because of faster fight mechanics, more combos and the fact its just 3d. If your a fan of beat em ups such as Tekken or Soul callibur then this game will fit nicely in your collection. If you a fan of Capcom and its rich history in the beat em up genre, go buy SF 4.
