A game not worthy of more then $5 dollars.
Like it's predecessors on the Gameboy Advance, Ultimate Spiderman is a side scroller. And like it's predecessors it suffers from lack of creativity, lack of good control, and good graphics.
The game's story is basically Peter and Venom being attacked by a group of mercenaries determined to capture the Venom suit. The story goes along with Venom and Peter. Following both of them, and having them bump into each other as well.
The gameplay is really disappointing. I cannot express how much I d the gameplay. It is your basic run and punch game. Swinging as Spiderman is the most fun you'll have in it. And there isn't enough room to webswing most of the time making it, pretty much, a useless function. Fighting is dull and a train wreck. The enemies are a bit tough and get many cheap shots at you. Especially when you are near a ledge.
Venom's part is just frustrating. And hardly fun to play. Sucking up people looks cool but it just gets so horrible and repetitive that I'd rather stick with Spiderman. One thing I am disappointed in was venom's lack of strength. He is the same strength as Spiderman, if not worse, and slower and bulkier. The only good thing about him is that you can actually gain health through ... well, for lack of better term, eating people. However you have to get them weak before you can eat them. I'd rather collect health tokens then fight a mercenary while very weak and in need of health.
Collectables are pretty sad. One extra upgrade per level. Finding them can is very, very, very difficult at times. Two upgrade tokens, health and web, are also found around the levels. The thing is that they can be collected even when you don't need them. Thus robbing you of an opportunity to get health if you grab the token too early.
The sound is pretty good. When you collect stuff it sounds similar to sounds found in Spiderman 2 console game. Venom makes a huge thud when he hits the ground but it doesn't always occur. Spiderman's webs are the same as ever. Nothing new here.
The graphics of the game are great! They look amazing and fluid but they don't save the game. The enemies are nice looking and the explosions are great. And Spiderman himself looks amazing and comic-like. It is awesome to watch Venom eat someone... for the first time.. and the second... then it gets repetitive.
Replaying the game...why would you? To get the moves you didn't unlock before? Why? So you can play it again without a reason? I don't see any reason to replay this game and I am sure most wouldn't either. You do unlock a Challenge Mode but I would rather have better unlockables.
Avoid this game. Or get the console version. You will be much happier if you do.
