Ultimate Spider-Man is one of a huge number of recent comic based games to hit shelves in the past few years. The visual style, fast and responsive control systems, and unique narrative set this title apart from the masses. This title finally captures the absolute comic feel that many previous titles have attempted. The visuals are not only top-notch from a technical standpoint, but they do justice to the source material which is actually more important. Ultimate Spider-Man also includes a unique narrative and story. Many Spider-Man fans are unfamiliar with the Ultimate Marvel storylines, and will find the plot and characters to be new and interesting. This sure beats playing a game that runs exactly through the script of the $100 million movie you just saw. The controls are responsive and the action is fast. Activision has once again done justice to the characters and source material in this aspect. The physics involved in jumping and web-swinging make players feel like they are controlling Spider-Man. Too many comic based games rely on completely generic combat that is identical for almost all superheroes, and activision deserves credit for giving each character their own style. One thing that does slow the game down a little is the frequent load times. The game is not crippled by them, like Hulk Ultimate Destruction was, but they can still get in the way and cause an unnecessary interruption in the action. The New York City environment is huge and filled with side-missions and hidden items. This can be a good thing or a bad thing depending on the gamer. Those interested in GTA style free roaming with no real objective will love swinging through the comic book city. Those interested in advancing the story will become highly frustrated with the often large distances between goals and the sometimes difficult task of actually finding the next story based mission. Some people with love the endless races and combat challenges, but I personally saw them as filler used by developers to hide the somewhat lacking story element of the game. All things considered, this is one of the best comic based games released to date. Spider-Man and Marvel fans will love it for the graphics, cameos, and source material. The action and combat are fast enough to appeal to any action/platformer fan. Ultimate Spider-Man is not an instant classic, but it is definately a fun diversion that is worth checking out.
It's hard to say anything bad about a game that makes it this fun to just swing around and explore. The running, the jumping, the web swinging, climbing up the sides of buildings, freefalling from huge heights, and zippi... Read Full Review
