Uncharted does nothing other games haven't done before, but what it does is 1st class, making a great classic.
User Rating: 9 | Uncharted: Drake's Fortune PS3
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune is an amazing title, let's just get that clear and out of the way. That aside, this game has been criticized for copying what other games have already done, that is true, now, that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Uncharted may copy a lot of things from other titles, but it does a great job of it, and it ultimatley turns into more than just "bits" of other titles, and it is destined to sit in the throne of one of the best PS3 games ever made. Uncharted tells the tale of one Nathan Drake, a light spirited treasure hunter thats always quick to pull a joke when bullets start flying. Young Drake is also the direct descendant of Sir Francis Drake, the famous 16th century pirate, and as you may have guessed, the story revolves around the treasure of dear Sir Francis, and the respective hunting of it. Nate isn't alone on his journey however, he is accompanied by Helena, the stop-at-nothing-to-get-the-story reporter, and Sully, the classic "hinky" buddy. The writing and dialogue in this game are brilliant, giving the story its own feel and wonder, and, most of all, character attachment, you'll really care about the fate of these characters, thanks to their wonderfully developed personalities. Two other elements that aid greatly in the games story are the sound design and, of course, the graphics. The Sound in this game is very good, the music is both thrilling and engagingand the sound effects really help you feel that mid combat rush. This game is perfect in terms of sound and, amazingly, the same can be said about its graphics. Never has a game looked so good on any platform, the jungle feels alive, the guns are brutal, the skyline is breath taking and every little spec of dust or small particle looks amazing. Simply the best graphics I have ever seen, 'nuff said. Now, the gameplay, and this is where most of the games criticism surfaces. The shooting system is exactly like that of Gears of War, now, this is also true, and what is wrong with that i ask? It's a great system! It works wonderfully, and provides a steady flow of steadiness and caution in the middle of combat. Don't think that just because you can cover behind everything, you're in for a smooth journey, Uncharted's enemies are RELENTLESS and seem to have machine precise aimming, spend about 10 seconds running around, and you'll go down, it's just that simple, yes, the game is hard. It's also very rewarding, and there's an undeniable sense of victory everytime a wave of enemies goes down. You'll spend most of the time fighting mercenaries, but near the end the games provides an amazing twist, which i wont reveal here, just know you'd better be prepared. Honestly, the only two things i see wrong with this game, is the lack of multiplayer, and the longevity, the game is just short, you can beat it in... a bit under 10 hours IF you take your sweet time finding the 60 treasures and getting trophies. Although you have good extras with which to occupy your time, the lasting appeal is still a bit short from "good". But even those flaws cannot take away this games excellence and pure fun factor, it may not be the most original title of them all, but it is undoubtedly one of the most solid, beautiful and fun gaming experiences you'll ever have.
