Vagrant Story takes place in a fantasy world full of intrigue and magic. You are a government agent, a Riskbreaker, sent into some city ruins that is the base of a terrorist group. The game is fairly one dimensional in typical older game fashion. You move from one small area to the next, and are forced to do a lot of aggravating backtracking. The most interesting element of the gameplay is the fighting system. When you attack, a sphere appears around you and tells you what you can attack (different enemies and their different body parts) within your range. When you hit an enemy you get the chance for a chain attack. If successful you get the bonus from whatever chain skill you used. This can range from more damage to healing yourself. Here is where it gets crazy, you can chain for as long as you want. If you can chain a big boss 50 times in a row, you will probably kill it without it throwing a punch. Although that is basically impossible because it’s so hard to keep it up. The level up system is also unique. After you beat a big boss, you see the available power ups spinning like a slot machine. MP+2, HP+1, HP+4, STR+2, AGI+1, ect. all whirl by while you hope to not get shanked.
That pretty much sums up the entire game. Move from area to area, kill all enemies, power up after killing a big boss, and move some crates around. Vagrant Story is a simple game that is a good addition to a complete RPG collection.
