Possibly the best RPG on PS3, great but easily misunderstood.

I was almost 'forced' to write this review by several reviewers who are clearly long standing RPG fans but have given this game average scores.

To start with it is in my mind the best 'original' RPG on the PS3 at the moment. It combines an innovative combat system with nice graphics, really interesting characters with some of the best elements of a JRPG (which I would list as the penchant for weepies and outright sentimentality). While there is not a great deal of competition in the PS3 RPG space at the moment, this does stand head and shoulders above everything (other than the Eternal Sonata XBox port).

For those old enough to to remember the XCOM series "e.g. UFO Alien Invasion" squad based RPG's you may recognise some of the ideas here. This seems to have lead to some seasoned RPG players giving up on the game and dismissing it as "you send out the squad, some die, some don't". Well this is about how you approach the game, I can say that in my entire campaign I lost only two soldiers, and I protected my squad as though it was my family. This possibly means you need to be able to accept defeat on occasions and enjoy trying to win well rather than win at any cost. You are graded on how well each battle goes so you may be able to get through with a grade E or D, but the rewards make it worth striving for those A's and B's.

The game can be unforgiving on occasions and several of the bosses you will die fighting (unless you read strategy guides). It does not matter how well you have played or learnt there will be occasions when you will die because you have failed to find a weakness in a boss before they get the upper hand. If you can not accept "game over" ever appearing in a game then this may not be to your liking, but the fact you can save just as much as you want, does offset this difficulty and prevent you having to replay for hours on end. There does seem to be one boss whom has caused a lot of poor reviews for this game "Selvaria" who seems almost impossible to kill. This seems to be because of her ability to take out your entire squad at will, while her dodge mechanic makes her virtually impossible to hit. It was a little bizzare cornering her in a tank only to miss her at point blank range while the rest of the squad is slaughtered in good order. However it was all the more rewarding to finally win (and my was a well versed in taking out all the other soldiers on the map by the end) (for me a mix of flamethrowers and undodgeable shot skills worked) ;)

If you like the simple sentimentality that comes with JRPG's and are willing to look after your squad and maybe on occasion have to re-fight a battle then you simply must play this game.

imo.
