While not quite the atrocity some make it out to be, Van Helsing for the GBA is still an unremarkable effort

As a general rule of thumb, I try to avoid bad games like the plague - throughout the forty year history of gaming, far too many excellent games have been released to waste any time on titles universally regarded as rubbish. Van Helsing for the Game Boy Advance is typically regarded as one of the worst games on its system, but I still picked it up anyway... even if only for its seventy-five cent price tag at my local game store. Although I went into the game expecting a totally broken experience, I was actually a bit surprised. Van Helsing on the GBA is an extremely mediocre and uneventful playthrough, but it is still playable and even mildly enjoyable while it lasts.

Sure, the story is poorly delivered, the graphics are dull, the controls are questionable, and the level design feels below average, but if you can overlook these issues, the result is a somewhat competent handheld beat-'em up. Though the game only lasts for roughly two hours and isn't good enough to justify multiple playthroughs, if you can find it cheap, I may even passively recommend this to a hardcore beat-'em up fan. Just don't expect anything that you'll remember a few years down the road. Van Helsing for the GBA is one of those games that can't be considered horrible (in my eyes, at least), but it still is a long way from feeling like a notable gaming experience.
