Vanguard Bandits is such an awesome game. A great story with an amazing array of characters. Its the story of a forgotten prince who learns of his heritage and rises to defeat the usurpers that took his families kingdom. There are 3 different plot threads that you have to choose from by choosing certain options at certain times. Each about 20 battles long but after you beat one tier, you can start back up and follow the others. But the real fun of the game is in the battles, and in the ATAC's which are like mobile suits. The tactical system works great using the ATAC's. As far as tactical games go, it's remarkable.
The reason it could never achieve what this game could is the rigidity of the game. Other than picking a choice every once in awhile there is no freedom in this game, you must follow the story and the story only. There also is no room for error. If you're characters are at a low level and weak, there is no way to build up or enhance them other than buying stronger equipment because the only battles in the game are story battles. So you must be smart with who you use and how you raise their stats upon level ups. If it wasn't for those drawbacks the game would be among the greatest tactical rpgs of all time.
