7 Big Ways NPCs Make Fallout 76 Feel More Alive

Fallout 76's free Wastelanders expansion finally adds NPCs to the post-apocalyptic RPG, and they totally change the way it's played.

Fallout 76 is adding NPCs via the Wastelanders update, which changes the post-apocalyptic online RPG in many different ways. As detailed in the video above, the expansion revamps the base game's main quest while offering its own story to experience, involving Raiders and Settlers moving into the wasteland.

Wastelanders was delayed briefly, but the expansion will come to PS4, Xbox One, and PC on April 14. The Steam version of Fallout 76 will be available one week ahead of the expansion, on April 7.

The business model is still highly anti-consumer and that is what keeps me away. From what I;ve read they built a huge grind into the game and balance it so that it is annoying unless you pay for their extras like a bot that scavenges scrap for you. They limit storage space way beyond what is necessary in a game all about scavenging.

How much do you all want to bet that Wastelanders is not going to make any difference for Fallout 76. It will still be a buggy mess, and guarantee when Wastelanders release it will be buggy as crap. The update looks amazing, but knowing Bethesda they will release this update as broken.

As long as any joe blow can affect my gaming, I will never buy this game. When I play Fallout, I am supposed to be the LONE survivor. I like it that way...

@thereal25: Sorry for Bethesda? **** them guys. They deserve all the ridicule and derision that this half polished turd of a game brings them.

@nknow1966: EXACTLY.

I'm not saying every developer at Bethesda is responsible for that piece of garbage. Many were just doing their jobs. But there are select few, project leads and of course the big wig himself, Todd Coward, who knew that this game was barely an Alpha when they released it onto their community.

I don't care that it's a non-traditional direction for the game. That's fine; was really looking forward to an online FO. But from a technical standpoint, the game was trash and should have never been released in that state. Bethesda went, overnight, from a company known for great titles (though many having issues that were more beta-esque at release) to being a laughing stock.

The saddest part is to watch Bethesda eat up good developers like id and Arkane Studios. Now, these companies fly the banner of a company that treats their customers like garbage. After dealing with the game's crap for 2 weeks, I requested a refund and came across their stellar, customer-first business logic of "If you've downloaded the game, we cannot issue a refund."

No protection for the consumer.

@aegis_kleais: It wasn't just trash from a technical standpoint. Even if it were bug-free, the damn thing is barely a game. They basically just recycled Fallout 4 and bolted on multiplayer. They couldn't even be bothered to stick to their own canon. It was a cash grab plain and simple. An attempt to gain maximum profit for minimum effort. An attitude that is way too prevalent in the gaming industry.

@nknow1966: Absolutely true, but I meant it not so much for the execs that thought making a multiplayer cash grabbing fallout would be a good idea, but moreso for the poor programmers and such that have to pretend that they're working on something worthwhile.

@thereal25:

Point taken. You're right. If I were a game dev or programmer, I sure as hell wouldn't want this hot mess on my resume.

I left because of the Stash Limit. I'm not allowed to collect different weapons and armor. That's my biggest issue.

Less than a week away now! This was already the best wasteland Bethesda ever created... and now it will only get better with the world changing expansion.

Ever upwards...

Nope. The only way this "minimum viable product" scheme goes away is if nobody buys the games. Not now, not later. Polished and complete games at launch get my money. Broken, P2W games with arrogant devs who insult their fans...they will never have my money.

There's not a lot of appeal with this update. Sure, it would have helped if the game had this from the start but it's completely undermined by the $100 subscription service, the blatant pay to win store offerings and the minefield of cheats that will strip you of anything you've spent hours upon hours of grinding for. Purchasing the game on Steam isn't going to change the fact Bethesda will be up in your face about their subscription and daily in-store offerings. Give me an offline single player mode as an option and you'll get my interest, otherwise, no thank you.

@gregrout: I wouldn't even buy it then. I loved Bethesda, I really did. But it's long past time companies that release bug ridden shit get their comeuppance. Besides Fallout 76 was such an unmitigated cash grab that I can't in good conscience give them my hard-earned money. Unless they change their ways I may never buy another Bethesda game.
