Bethesda Game Studios boss Todd Howard has confirmed what some fans have feared: it is unlikely that Bethesda looks to an outside studio like Obsidian for game development. Obsidian Entertainment developed Fallout: New Vegas, which many fans have regarded as the best in Bethesda's Fallout series.
Howard told this to Guardian, noting how large Bethesda is compared to back when New Vegas was in development: "I wouldn't say never, [but] now that our company is so big, it's always better to keep stuff internal ... it becomes less likely, but I could never say never. I thought the Obsidian guys did a fabulous job."
Since 2010, Bethesda Softworks has acquired Dishonored and Prey developer Arkane Studios, which has teams in both France and Texas; purchased Wolfenstein series developer MachineGames; opened a studio in Montreal; and rebranded BattleCry Studios as Bethesda Game Studios Austin. BGS Austin is currently working on Fallout 76 alongside the original Bethesda Game Studios. Fallout 76 is the multiplayer-focused entry that's set in West Virginia and is scheduled for release on November 14.
In the same interview, Bethesda marketing head Pete Hines reiterated the company's commitment to single-player games.
"Rage 2 is a giant single-player game, Doom Eternal is single-player, and Wolfenstein: Youngblood is single-player. Single-player is still a thing; it might continue to grow or evolve, but it's part of who we are, and we still think there's room to be successful. That doesn't mean that we should keep doing things the way we did five or 10 years ago--we've got to continue to change how we approach it."
