Apparently, I'm An Xbox Bro Now

The Xbox's identity has come a long way over the years, from being the system Kurt Indovina had zero interest in, to his console of choice... but how did this happen?

Since its launch in 2001, Xbox has always seemed to appeal to a very specific demographic--the bro demographic. Or, that’s at least how Kurt Indovina saw it. Over the years, Kurt has watched as the Xbox evolved from being the console that came pre-packaged with a headset encouraging players to talk smack to each other online, to the console intended for everyone, regardless of age, demographic, or accessibility requirements.

While Kurt never felt the Xbox was intended for him, all that has changed in recent years. In this video, he explains how the identity of Xbox has changed, starting from the system to play Halo and Gears of War on, to shifting its focus towards accessibility with the Adaptive Controller, and services like Game Pass.

Kurt also deconstructs the bro culture that surrounded Xbox, by looking back on the early 2000s, examining the documentation for terms like bromance, and how its popularization rose alongside bro-affiliated movies like American Pie and Van Wilder.

But since the launch of the modern Xbox Series X|S consoles, Microsoft has successfully turned its image around, drifting further and further from a niche demographic, to the one that wants you to play more games, with more people.

Microsoft has many features and best online services.

Nintendo combined mobile and home gaming.

Sony consoles plays games and doesn’t have many unique features and is years behind Microsoft. PS5 is really not worth the asking price.

The PS5 shortage will really hurt because publishers be less loyal to brand....

@deathtroll2: Sony doesn´t care about Japan anymore

@LeoKRock: Or buy a PS5 for Demon’s Souls Remake.

Or if nostalgia wants you to revisit the glory of the 360 days, there’s the Series X.

This gen has barely had any great titles yet outside of Demon’s Souls Remake and the Switch hasn’t had many exclusives either. Gamers like games. Xbox don’t really have anything that sets it apart to advertise it’s new console with. Games are gonna do it.

Feel like it still caters to that demographic. Not so blatantly as the early 00's, but still feels like it's trying to be "the cool one". The og xbox had some great games though, that's the only highlight in it's history, imo.

I was into MP and clans on PC long before Xbox came out. And I was playing a lot on the NES, SNES and PS1. Even when the Xbox did come out, I was still playing MP games mainly on PC, including the first Halo.

It wasn't until my kids were old enough to want to play games and my son in particular wanted to play them with me that I got the original Xbox. We were blown away by how it felt like the system was made for the two of us to play together even though you could do so on other consoles. I remember making a crossover cable to link two Xboxes directly and playing the crap out of Doom 3 together. We were heavily into games like Halo and Unreal Tournament and eventually Gears but I don't think we ever considered ourselves part of the dudebro culture. I had online friends who I played with frequently and had the occasional clan but most of my time was spent playing with one or more of my kids.

These days, my kids have all grown up and moved away and we don't get to play together very often anymore as free time is rare and my reflexes have gotten pretty squishy and my kids are way beyond my skill level now. We still play occasionally for laughs even though I get beaten pretty badly but, I'll always look back on the Xbox and Xbox 360 as family consoles rather than the dudebro consoles people saw them as. So seeing the Xbox One and XsX morph into a more family oriented, less shooter dudebro console seems natural to me. It's what I always felt they were despite people calling me a dudebro online every time I mentioned I had an Xbox.

What a lot of nonsense. Xbox has never been niche. But it’s always been the best all round gaming package since the OG Xbox.

I was lucky enough to purchase a PS5 and a Series X. I haven't owned an Xbox since the 360, but I have to say that the Series X has exceeded all of my expectations. Personally, I'm finding that I'm liking it better than the PS5 (as someone who is coming off the PS4). Game Pass, backward compatibility, and my personal favorite, Quick Resume (this should be a standard for all consoles going forward). I'm not a fanboy for either console, but Microsoft really did a good job with this one. Can't wait to see what games/exclusives they have in store for us.

@brazzo09: Just now seeing this. I just got a Series X this past Sunday. I have NEVER owned an Xbox before, as I did the Atari, SNES, PC, and then PS3 and finally PS4.

I would have bought a PS5 if there had been any available. I'm actually glad things worked out like they did. I'm really enjoying the Series X. I was excited to get a new console and I really do like Game Pass. Although the Bethesda deal, didn't sway me... I'm glad I'll eventually be able to play the new games they come out with in the future.

I might end up getting a PS5 when it's available down the road, but for now? I'm completely happy with how things turned out.

@brazzo09: your in the same vein as I am, last xbox was 360 and I'd be coming off my ps4. However I own neither of the new systems as here in frenchy Canada town they're harder to get your hands on than a greased bowling ball! A buddy of mine grabbed a series X (he lives in england) and says it's great. He raves about game pass, though for me I'm not seeing any titles round the corner making a series x worth it? To be fair I could make a similar argument for the ps5 if it wasn't for Demons Souls?!

I appreciate the concept behind the article, but the entire thing felt like a backhanded compliment. It basically relegates the majority of the brand's 20 year history to Master Chief, headsets, chainsaw bayonets, Mountain Dew, and bro culture and doesn't really do the Xbox consoles any justice. Some of us saw the original Xbox as a genuine alternative or excellent complement to the other consoles of its day as it offered exclusives such as Jet Set Radio Future, Gunvalkyrie, Ninja Gaiden Black, Project Gotham Racing, Phantom Dust, Otogi, Rallisport Challenge and, at the time, excellent western RPGs such as Knights of the Old Republic, Jade Empire, and Fable.

Then, the 360 entered the fold and offered entry into the HD era a year prior to its competitors, offering an early library including Kameo, Project Gotham Racing 3, Amped 3, Dead Rising, Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion, and Viva Pinata and launching the excellent Xbox Live Arcade with games such as Geometry Wars: Retro Evolved. As time went on, it continued to offer some interesting exclusive games such as Alan Wake, Fable II, Forza Horizon, Blue Dragon, The Last Remnant, and Banjo Kazooie Nuts & Bolts as well as a superior online service.

I completely understand that, as someone who was on the outside looking in during most of Xbox's existence, much of the marketing as well as your own slices of Xbox experiences may have colored your opinion in a brotastic way. Please do understand, though, that beneath what appears to be an exterior comprised of shouting, fragging, and nothing but shooters, there has always been much more on offer.

@DIYNoise: I'm pretty sure Mass Effect was also an exclusive on the 360.
